Securus provides prisons with new revenues to fight crime

Throughout the United States, prisons are under constant budgetary pressure and are always encouraged to be as self-sufficient as possible. While many critics decry the high rates that prisoners often pay for phone calls, much of these exorbitant costs can be explained by the fact that prisons are often required to generate revenues in any way possible.

Companies like Securus Technologies play an important part in generating crucial revenues from prison phone systems. This money is used to keep prisons adequately staffed and to aid directly in the investigation of crimes and maintain the phone systems themselves as crime free forms of communication.

In the state of Louisiana, Securus provides an average of 71 percent of all revenues it collects from inmate calling to the facilities themselves. It has done this while managing to keep the average cost of a phone call in the state to just $0.15 per minute, a rate low enough so that almost any inmate can stay in nearly constant contact with his loved ones.

Still, some critics claim that the rates that inmates pay for phone calls should match those that are paid in the free market. However, wardens and administrators warn that such expectations are not realistic. The phone systems within prisons need to be kept secure. This entails the monitoring of all conversations to ensure that the system is not being abused for criminal purposes or to violate the rules of the institution. Such services require manpower and technology, things that suck valuable resources away from other tasks that prison staff must carry out.

For this reason many wardens have advised their critics, should they succeed in forcing market rates upon prison phone systems, they will have no choice but to remove the phones entirely, leaving inmates and their families no way to communicate with one another.

Securus issues tech challenge to GTL, wins by default

Recently, prison communications leader Securus Technologies issued a challenge to long time foe GTL. Securus offered to face off the companies’ respective video visitation technologies. The contest was to be judged by a trusted third party. GTL declined to participate. Securus views this as the ultimate vindication of their video visitation product and a tacit admission on the part of GTL that their technologies cannot compete on a level playing field with those of Securus. Thus, Securus maintains its position as the unquestioned leader in the inmate communications industry.

Game-changing technology serves multiple customer groups

There’s no question that Securus’ video visitation systems have been a tremendous benefit to the inmates and family members who have been able to access them. Catching on like a contagion, the system has been installed in a huge number of U.S. prisons, mostly driven by popular demand. The cost savings to inmates and their families are huge due to the low cost of VoIP-based phone calls as well as the burden of having to come to the prison for in-person visits being lifted.

But there have also been great benefits for the guards and administrators at the prisons where the systems have been installed. The fully integrated suite of investigatory solutions make things like detecting unauthorized parties or communication almost completely automated. Many serious security threats, such as incarcerated gang members communicating with others in the gang on the outside, have been drastically reduced due to the system’s astounding capabilities.

Video visitation and VoIP telephony generally have made detecting and monitoring conversations involving criminal activity a nearly completely automated process. Through the use of artificial intelligence, voice recognition and other biometric techniques, Securus is offering products which can make prisons safer than many would have dreamed possible, even a decade ago.

In addition, the have also worked hard to attain formal accreditation which allows them to release credible information whether verbally, online, or in print form.

Securus Technologies is passionate and highly dedicated to providing the best customer service to their clients. In an effort to comply with and implement the BBB’s accreditation requirements, they created an in-house call center with over 200 call center representatives. Securus Technologies reps are trained to perform using the BBB’s standards as a guideline. They have been taught to build trust, advocate honesty, transparency, honor promises; and address disputes quickly and professionally. All of this is done while safeguarding the customer’s privacy and exercising integrity.

To date, the Securus call center has a 4.3 out of 5 satisfaction score. Calls average 11 seconds and have a 99% resolution rate. This goes to show the company’s dedication to their customers and their efforts to keep in line with the BBB’s standards.

According to de Hoyos, reaching the kind of accreditation status they have at the moment means that the BBB has successfully confirmed and verified that their company is the largest facility provider of full-spectrum solutions; having a team of over 1,300 representatives all over the country.

Video Visitation Improvements From Inmate Communication Tech Company Affect All

The growth in the use of video visitation in corrections facilities has seen this become one of the best known ways of inmates interacting with those who are still free. Securus Technologies has been working with many of the top law enforcement agencies in North America; the THREADS platform has been in place for a number of years, but has now been given a major, patented update that pushes Securus to a new position amongst those of use who live and work in the corrections industry.

THREADS 3.1 has been a game changer for many of us who are looking for the best ways of making sure the highest quality of video and audio is available for the use of both inmates and investigators. I believe one of the major bonuses offered by the THREADS 3.1 platform is the opportunity to monitor inmate communication they interact with other individuals inside the jail and their visitors. Within the prison community the chance to monitor the communications of inmates is something I believe can have a big impact on halting forthcoming crimes planned from within the walls of a jail.

I believe the chance to monitor the communications of individuals is important for officers within an institution, and the investigators who may be called in to solve any crime. Securus has been working to make sure each and every aspect of the new THREADS 3.1 platform is as user friendly as possible, which means any investigator should have the ability to look back over various interactions of inmates being investigated. The ability to integrate the video visitation platform with inmate phone calls software and others within the THREADS software means interactions can be printed or compared to other interactions an inmate is taking part in.

Securus Technologies Makes Video Visitation a Reality For Families

Securus Technologies is a company that is growing. This company has hundreds of law enforcement products, and one the most innovative creations of the software for video visitation. I have become a fan of this company because it has given me access to friends that have been behind bars. I like the concept because I never wanted to actually go to a prison to visit anyone. Also inmate phone calls, though great through Securus thanks to their amazing customer service team, are not as personable as video. I thought that this was a much better concept.

Personally, I believe that at home video visitation is long overdue. I know that the video systems are not in all prisons, but these type of systems should be. I have enjoyed being in a state where I have access to visiting my incarcerated friends this way.

I believe that the importance of this is greatly underestimated because many people don’t consider what inmates are going through once they are in. There are many criminals that have been taken off of the street, but there are some that are actually innocent. There are people that are locked up and they are still trying to fight their cases. It is going to be good for these people to have some type of support system on the outside. And either way, the family’s of the imprisoned person suffer without the benefits of good inmate communication. That is why video conferencing systems are so important.

Securus is not the first company that I have heard of that has utilize this type of software for inmate communication, but it may be one of the top leaders for the prison systems. Don’t just take my word for it though, check out their reviews here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.securus.videoclient&hl=en

Right now there are limited states that have this type of video conferencing available, but I believe this technology is the way the prison visitation is going.

I believe that lots of prisons are going to try to implement this because it will cut down on the number of people that are coming to prison to visit. This can actually save money in the long run because he cut down on the number of guards that have to be available to facilitate the visitation process. This is one of the ways to cut the operational costs. There is always a lot of talk about the costs that are associated with housing inmates. Few people take the time to look at the operating costs of facilitating visitations. In my opinion, video visitation between families throughout conferencing may be one of the best concept for the government system as a whole. It is convenient and a lot more cost effective.
