Brief History Of Luiz Carlos Trabuco And His Tenure At Bradesco

Bradesco is bigger than all banks in the South American nation of Brazil, taking exception to Itaú Unibanco, only reaching its number-one ranking through a 2008 merger.

Luiz Carlos Trabuco is the current President of Banco Bradesco, as a matter of fact, only the fourth person to occupy the presidential rank since the bank’s inception in 1943. Not like most executives of big-name organizations, especially banks, Bradesco hired Luiz Carlos Trabuco after 41 years of service to the financial institution.

Luiz Carlos Trabuco is best known for leading Banco Bradesco’s push to acquire HSBC Holdings’ Brazilian banking operations in August of 2015. Lázaro Brandão, Chairman of the Board at Banco Bradesco, who formerly served as the institution’s president, signed his approval on the transaction within hours of Trabuco’s formalization of proceedings. Mr. Trabuco was interested in purchasing HSBC’s Brazilian banking assets as early as November of 2014, with the deal’s closure coming in early 2016.

Luiz Carlos Trabuco still serves as the President of Bradesco to this day. Mr. Trabuco earned the title in 2009 after replacing Márcio Cypriano, previously at the helm of Bradesco for the decade spanning 1999 to 2009. His title as “numero uno” didn’t come easy, as he worked for the bank in various capacities since 1969.

Mr. Trabuco graduated secondary school early, immediately enrolling in the University of São Paulo for a bachelor’s degree from the department of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters. Within months of earning this degree, Luiz Carlos Trabuco remained inside the city of São Paulo and attended the Foundation School of Sociology and Politics of São Paulo for a graduate degree in Sociopsychology. These two degrees were instrumental in Trabuco’s rise through the ranks of Bradesco, knowing how to interact with others, lead his employees, and ultimately become the supreme leader of one of Brazil’s largest banks.

After getting a well-rounded education in São Paulo, Luiz Carlos Trabuco applied for an opening at Bradesco’s Marilia branch as a teller, traveling more than five hours away to his hometown, where he’d stay for two more years following his 1969 hire. In 1971, Luiz Carlos Trabuco was given the opportunity to work at Bradesco’s headquarters in the Cidade de Deus region of São Paulo. Still in its early stages in Brazil’s financial markets, Bradesco’s organization would quickly find out just how valuable Mr. Trabuco will prove to its operations.

Luiz Carlos Trabuco worked in various roles for the thirteen years following his 1971 promotion. Mr. Trabuco was known for beefing up the existing system of communication, even though he wasn’t in a top-down role during this time period. In 1984, Luiz Carlos Trabuco found himself as the Director of Marketing for the entire bank of Bradesco. While his fifteen years of service at the time certainly prepared him for the role, along with his positive performance throughout that time period, his two degrees in sociology, philosophy, and psychology undoubtedly helped prepare him for communicating marketing information to the Brazilian market.

While Luiz Carlos Trabuco worked at Bradesco’s branches or general headquarters for his first 23 years, Mr. Trabuco was assigned to its personal pension plan maintenance office in 1992. He remained in the role of Executive Director for six years, than was bumped up to President of the pension company in 1998. Just one year following this prestigious appointment, Luiz Carlos Trabuco moved to Banco Bradesco’s insurance subsidiary group, initially serving as its Executive Vice President. In 2003, Mr. Trabuco became the outright President of the insurer, another six years before assuming his current role.

Luiz Carlos Trabuco was named the Brazilian financial market’s Entrepreneur of the Year by top-tier financial news media agency Isto É Dinheiro.
